my name is janell and im looking for some advice. I have a 7 y/o son that has been diagnosed with adhd inattentive/depression/and anxiety. I have been battling out with miami dade public schools since he started kidergarten. he is now in 2nd grade and can barely write let alone read, I have tried so hard to get him placed in special classes to no avail. We have been waiting for phsycological eval since last school year I finally went over the summer and had one done myself which I gave a copy to the assistant principal at his school but yet nothing has happened. He continues to fail and he is very depressed over this stating how much he hates schools because he is the dumbest kid in the class and so forth. I have tried everything I can think of unfortunetly there are no special schools or programs for children with adhd in my area. Has anyone been through this? , if so what can I do to help my child be successful? Thank You, Janell

Janell,
I understand how you feel........ and you are doing the right thing with making sure your son gets what e is entitled to.
I recently watch a PBS program called "You are not alone" which i believe every parent in our shoe feels. One of the partners that help put the program together >>>>> ucp.org >>>> which can give you information and help you need for your son.
Just keep your head and continued to be your best for him and you.

Janell,
I am theTraining Development Coordinator for PtoP It's not enough to just give the school a copy of the private evaluation. That should have been done through a RT meeting (review team meeting) what you will need to do to expedite the process is write a letter to the Assistant principal requesting a RT meeting so that you can discuss your child's educational concerns, review the evaluation and discuss the possiblity of services. we can help you through this process if you like. Just call the office and ask to speak to one of our Education and Support Specialist.

One of my sons has ADHD and I completely understand your frustration. Frustration is good because you're doing something and you need to press on. When you had your son evaluated, did you request for the place to send a copy of the evaluation to Dade Co. Public Schools? I strongly encourage you to overcome your frustration and just press on. Believe me, I was my son's schools worst nightmare but now he's receiving the services he needs.

Hi Janet, I struggled with the EXACT same issues with my son - (( THERE IS HELP )) My Son is now 19 and in College, He learned to read and write at the AGE of 10 but I never gave up on him. He personally took him out of school and Homeschooled him myself and with the help of tutors. He still struggles to write ( Spelling ) but he is a fine young man. I would be HAPPY to help you and guide you in the right direction, I really went through a lot with my son and the Public School system so I DO know the LAW and what protects you! Feel free to email me: FloridaHomeschoolHelp@yahoo.com I will be happy to help! Grace edited by FloridaHomeschoolHelp on 4/14/2010
