Hi,
My grandson has PDD-NOS (is on the Autism Spectrum). He is in a regular classroom at a private school. There are many other children in his class that have various disabilities. The classroom size was 26 students to 2 teachers and 2 personal shadows. It's a good school, but the ratio was too large. He is on grade level or above, but most of what he's learned has been from memory. I have to fill in the gaps at home for him to really understand what he is learning. As the grades advance, subjects will be more abstract. I know he will have difficulty if he doesn't have enough attention in the classroom. Because of this we are thinking seriously about homeschooling him. He, learning the academics, would not be my greatest challenge. It would be to find a social network. I know children with Autism especially need socialization experiences so I have talked to a lot of people online and found out their experience with socialization. Many of them say that they have to cut back a little on socializing, because there are so too many opportunities. The other reason we are thinking about homeschooling is that private school is such a large expense. There is no money left over for therapies, which he desperately needs and has been doing without. We could spend the money on occupational therapy, speech and language therapy and social skills therapy if the money was available. I'm excited about thinking about it, but I'm also feel a little overwhelmed by this great idea. What a wonderful, but big undertaking it would be. I'm interested in your experiences in finding out how you are finding the right fit for your child.
Thanks
