Supplemental Needs Trust
A supplemental needs trust is a legal arrangement designed to provide financial support for a person with disabilities without jeopardizing their eligibility for government benefits. The trust is established by someone other than the person with disabilities (typically a parent or grandparent).
Assets of the trust are managed by a trustee. The primary objective of a supplemental needs trust is to preserve eligibility for government benefits while providing additional funds to enhance the trust beneficiary’s quality of life. This can include paying for medical expenses not covered by government programs, education, recreation, housing, transportation, and other supplemental needs that contribute to the beneficiary’s well-being.
